Railway war
Ukrainian railroaders followed Russian colleagues in attempt to have oilmen by the short hairs

For Russian and Kazakh oil exporters, the joy of celebrated over the post-USSR lands Old New Year [New Year by Julian calendar, used in Russia up to 1918; corresponds to 13-14 January by modern Gregorian calendar — OM] was overshadowed by a telegram wired from the depths of Ukrainian railways operator «Ukrzaliznytsya». M. Mostovy, Deputy General Director of Ukrzaliznytsya, informed the shippers and buyers that as of 12 January 2004, there will be a 15% boost of shipment tariffs on all export-bound cargoes (excluding oil products) entering Ukraine from Russian territory or leaving for Russia.
