On the wave of gradual deterioration of mainland reserves, the beginning of the new century sees Russian companies increasingly moving their exploration and production efforts to the Arctic area. This raises the issue of hydrocarbons transportation means for safe operation in Arctic conditions. St Petersburg marine machine building design bureau Malakhit along with close JSC New Submarine technologies and Arctic Trade and transportation company and several other related Russian design institutions drafted the concept of the Arctic Transportation System (ATS) using nuclear submarine tankers.
